data-contrast="auto">Course Level: From beginner to advanced

Course Description:

Pulse compression and characterization are essential components of femtosecond laser technology, encompassing techniques from chirped pulse amplification (CPA) to pulse compression. This course introduces the fundamentals of femtosecond pulses in the time and frequency domains, starting with the time-bandwidth product and emphasizing how the spectral phase influences the temporal characteristics of femtosecond pulses. Hands-on computer simulations with a free pulse shaping program help illustrate these concepts. The course also provides a concise overview of the physics and historical development of pulse shapers, followed by the requirements for their experimental implementation. Key applications of pulse shaping are explored, including pulse compression, pulse characterization, generation of pulse replicas, and control of nonlinear optical processes such as selective two-photon excitation and vibrational mode excitation. Additional applications in material processing and microscopy are also discussed. By providing a strong foundation in short pulse understanding, characterization, and compression, the course highlights how pulse shaping can be effectively used to control light-matter interactions, supported by practical examples.

Benefits and Learning Objectives:

1. Understand and describe femtosecond laser pulses in both the frequency and time domains.
2. Predict how spectral phases, such as chirp, affect a pulse in the time domain.
3. Design elements for precise pulse shaping.
4. Simulate output pulses by applying phase and amplitude modulation using a freeware pulse\u0002shaping program.
5. Create independently controlled pulse replicas with attosecond precision using pulse-shaping
techniques.
6. Characterize laser pulses using methods like FROG, SPIDER, and MIIPS, and compress pulses
to achieve transform-limited output by eliminating phase distortions.
7. Summarize the advantages of phase control for optimizing ultrafast laser performance.

Intended Audience:

This annually updated course is designed for anyone working in ultrafast science or using
femtosecond lasers in academia or industry. Participants will explore how phase control can
significantly enhance femtosecond laser applications. No prior knowledge of pulse shaping is
required, making it accessible to all skill levels. Advanced users will also gain valuable insights
into advanced topics not typically covered in textbooks.

Instructor Biography:

Professor Dantus brings over 30 years of expertise in femtosecond laser research.
